Selling Your Home

When I was a kid, my parents decided to sell the small brick home we lived in. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive any high offers for the house. Because I don’t ever want to experience the difficulties selling a house that my parents did, I’ve researched home improvements homeowners can make to add value to their properties before placing them on the market. A great remodeling project to undertake before selling a home is installing new windows. New windows can add value by improving both the appearance and energy efficiency of a home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of installing new windows in your home before attempting to sell it. Enjoy!

New Do-It-Yourself Guide: 4 Things To Take Into Consideration When Installing A Frameless Shower Doors

by Jesse Henderson

If you have never done a do-it-yourself project before, and you want to start off your DIY career by installing a frameless shower door. Here are four things that you need to take into consideration when installing a frameless shower door.

#1 Pay Attention To The Angles

The first thing that you need to take into consideration when installing a frameless shower door in your bathroom is the angles. When you build a frameless shower door, you need to use very precise angles, such as 180-degree angle and 90 degree angles.

Using very precise angles is really important because most of the hardware that you can purchase for installing a shower door use those two types of angles.

If you install your shower doors at odd angles, such as 55 degrees, you will not be able to find the right hardware to put together your shower door or you will have to have the hardware custom made or modified. You will cut your overall costs by using the two angles listed above to create your shower door.

If you want to hide your hinges, you should use pivot hinges. Pivot hinges are located at the top and bottom of your glass doors and provide a smoother glass look. Side mounted hinges attach along the sides of your door frame and thus are more noticeable.

#2 Make Sure There Is Proper Support

Second, you need to make sure that your new glass shower door has the proper support for the weight of the glass. You need to make sure that where you install your shower door is supported by very strong studs.

Make sure that you add support studs into the wall if they are not already present; this will help ensure that your walls are able to able to support the weight of your new glass shower doors, which can be very heavy.

#3 Make Sure The Walls Are Vertical

Third, you need to make sure that the walls of your frameless shower are perfectly vertical. Often times, walls are not really as straight as they look to you. It is important that you fix the walls so that they are perfectly vertical. This will help ensure the walls are strong enough to support the shower and that the plumbing behind the walls is not compromised and is properly protected. This may seem like a simple step, but it is often overlooked, resulting in plumber problems down the road.

#4 Think Carefully About Glass Thickness

Fourth, think carefully about how thick you want the glass to be in your shower. If you want the strongest glass configuration, you should go with the maximum glass thickness. However, if you don't have strong support studs or there is any area that you feel is weak in your shower design, you may want to go with thinner glass shower doors to that your walls and studs have less weight to bear.

If you are attaching the glass to the wall, it is generally okay to go with a thicker glass panel. If you are attaching the glass to another glass panel, you may want to go with thinner glass panels.

If you want to install patterned or colored glass, it generally only comes in the thickest glass option, so you need a really strong shower structure if you want to install patterned or colored glass in your shower.

#5 Think About Accessories

Finally, you need to think about the type of accessories that you want to add to your shower. Make sure that you plan for storage space inside of your shower so that you have somewhere to put all of your soaps and shampoos. You may also want a place to sit down; in that case, you are going to want to add a shower seat to your shower design.

When planning on installing a frameless shower and shower door, it is vitally important that the structure of your shower is strong. Use the four tips above to help you plan and build your new shower.
