Selling Your Home

When I was a kid, my parents decided to sell the small brick home we lived in. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive any high offers for the house. Because I don’t ever want to experience the difficulties selling a house that my parents did, I’ve researched home improvements homeowners can make to add value to their properties before placing them on the market. A great remodeling project to undertake before selling a home is installing new windows. New windows can add value by improving both the appearance and energy efficiency of a home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of installing new windows in your home before attempting to sell it. Enjoy!

Can You Really Save Money On Your Energy Bills By Replacing Your Windows?

by Jesse Henderson

Like most homeowners, you are probably looking for ways to reduce your energy costs and keep your family comfortable all year round. You often hear about how replacing the windows in your home can save you a lot of money. But the cost of replacing those windows may be a large expense you just aren't sure you want to have. To put things into prospective, this article will show you that you really will lower your energy costs with new windows. It will probably be exactly the type of information you need to make a final decision about buying new windows for your home. Keep reading to learn more.

Energy Bill Savings

Today, it all boils down to money. People want to spend less money in order to save as much as possible. One way to save money is to replace all your windows with Energy Star windows, which means that the windows meet a high standard of energy efficiency as set forth by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. You know a product is an Energy Star product because it will have a blue and white star logo on it.

In fact, depending on the number of windows you have and where you live in the country, you could save $126-$465 a year when you replace single-pane windows. If you replace double-pane, clear glass windows, you can save about $27-$111 a year.

Credits On Your Federal Taxes

While the cost savings of having new Energy Star windows in your home is awesome, the price to replace your old windows can be daunting. Luckily, there are Federal Tax credits that can help you with that cost. You can apply for the tax credit as long as you replace your windows with Energy Star windows. And the great thing is that you don't have to replace every window in your home in order to get this credit.

For example, for 2016, you can receive a 10% tax credit up to $500 when you replace old windows with Energy Star windows on your primary home. The credit does not apply to new construction or rental properties. What is also great about this federal tax credit is that it's retroactive to include new windows purchased in 2015.

Alternatives To Replacing Windows

If you are not quite ready to replace your windows at this time, but you really need to cut the cost of your energy bills, then there are some alternatives. Start by making insulating your existing windows. You could do something as basic as covering your windows with plastic will lower your energy bills. Other ways to lower energy costs without replacing your windows would be to caulk the holes around drafty windows and/or weatherstripping around double-hung windows.

As you can see, replacing the existing windows in your home will definitely lower your energy bills. And if you have single-pane windows, you'll get the most benefit of installing new Energy Star windows. But if new windows aren't in your budget at this time, you have alternatives.
