About Me

Selling Your Home

When I was a kid, my parents decided to sell the small brick home we lived in. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive any high offers for the house. Because I don’t ever want to experience the difficulties selling a house that my parents did, I’ve researched home improvements homeowners can make to add value to their properties before placing them on the market. A great remodeling project to undertake before selling a home is installing new windows. New windows can add value by improving both the appearance and energy efficiency of a home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of installing new windows in your home before attempting to sell it. Enjoy!

The Big Picture: Windows You Can Use to Replace Picture Windows

by Jesse Henderson

Big picture windows are nice to have, especially if they look out onto a lovely view. However, some picture windows have a tendency to dull with age or collect moisture in between their panes of glass. As such, they become less attractive and more difficult to use. If your picture windows need replacements, here are a few other window options you can try.

Double-Hung, Triple-Sash Windows

Another option is to break up the big picture-window space with a series of three windows, all double-hung so that the sashes can open and close as you choose. These windows are a single framed set, but they operate like three separate windows in the space provided. If your picture window was a little smaller than most, you can also divide the space with two double-hung windows instead.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are often used to replace big picture windows because casement windows are about the same size. Better still, the casement windows can be opened outward on vertical hinges, allowing breezes to enter your home. The windows themselves double as wind flaps, which collect the wind and deflect it into the house through the screens. When you need to clean your casement windows, you can easily remove the screens and wipe the windows while standing inside your house. This makes this type of window much easier to care for than other window options.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are also a nice replacement-window option for big picture windows. These windows build an outward structure of three windows that look out in three directions on the view ahead. Bay windows are also large enough to fit the space provided by the former picture windows, which means very little construction will be needed to install them. In addition to creating a more three-dimensional view, bay windows often provide the interior structure of a window seat, which allows you to sit and relax while taking in the view.

Colonnade Windows

If the view from your picture window is no longer pretty because of some monstrosity built right in front of you, you can change your picture window to something more pleasant. Colonnade windows are a good option. They break up the large window space with several vertical windows that are more decorative. If you really want to block the view entirely, you can also use colonnade art glass windows, which are very pretty and provide a lot more privacy than any other window option.
