Selling Your Home

When I was a kid, my parents decided to sell the small brick home we lived in. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive any high offers for the house. Because I don’t ever want to experience the difficulties selling a house that my parents did, I’ve researched home improvements homeowners can make to add value to their properties before placing them on the market. A great remodeling project to undertake before selling a home is installing new windows. New windows can add value by improving both the appearance and energy efficiency of a home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of installing new windows in your home before attempting to sell it. Enjoy!

Getting New Windows? 2 Things You Need to Consider

by Jesse Henderson

When you install windows, you are likely putting in something you will have in your home for a long time. For this reason, it is important that take some things into consideration before you have the windows installed. Below is some information on choosing trim for your windows as well as information about the best type of window to install in a bathroom to help you get started.

Choose New Trim

Even though it will cost you more money, you need to replace the trim. Firstly, the trim could become damaged during the installation of the windows, especially if the trim is old. Secondly, old trim will stand out against brand-new windows because it would not match.

Window trim is not there only to make your windows look better, however, and it serves an important purpose. It is used to cover any gaps that may be in the window and helps keep your home protected from humidity, heat and water. Secure trim will also reduce exterior sounds inside your home.

During installation, make sure the window contractor installs a drip cap on top of the window frame. This will prevent water and heat from coming into your home if there are ever any gaps at the top. If you want the drip cap to add aesthetics, choose crown molding or cornice.

Make sure the trim has a window sill. This works much like the drip cap in that it will keep water and heat or cool air from entering your home.

There are different materials you can use for the window trim, including:

  • Wood
  • Fiberglass
  • Vinyl
  • Aluminum

Whatever you choose, make sure the trim goes well with the colors and design of your home.

Install Tempered Glass in the Bathroom

If you are installing windows in a bathroom, you should use tempered glass. This is because this type of glass is safer for anyone using the bathroom. This is because if the glass is broken in any way, it will shatter into small pieces. Other types of glass will break into large pieces when broken, and bigger pieces can cause greater injury. For privacy, you can put a glazing on the tempered glass to make it more opaque.

If the bottom edge of your windows are less than 60 inches within a walking or standing surface, you must use tempered glass to stay within building codes.

A window contractor such as JFK Window & Door Co can help you with both of these things and give you many tips for when you are installing your windows.
