About Me

Selling Your Home

When I was a kid, my parents decided to sell the small brick home we lived in. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive any high offers for the house. Because I don’t ever want to experience the difficulties selling a house that my parents did, I’ve researched home improvements homeowners can make to add value to their properties before placing them on the market. A great remodeling project to undertake before selling a home is installing new windows. New windows can add value by improving both the appearance and energy efficiency of a home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the benefits of installing new windows in your home before attempting to sell it. Enjoy!

How To Clean Sliding Door Tracks

by Jesse Henderson

A dirty track can lead to a stuck or difficult to move sliding glass door. When this happens, forcing the door open and closed isn't just difficult, it can also lead to more damage to the bearings or rollers in the door. The answer to the problem is to thoroughly clean the tracks. The following steps can walk you through the process.

#1: Door removal

It's a good idea to remove the door completely, as opposed to just cleaning the parts of the tracks you can see when the door is pushed open normally. A full cleaning ensures there is no more dirt stuck in the track or wheels to cause more issues later on.

To remove the door, you need to determine what type of door you have. Check the bottom rail for the presence of screws along the face of the rail. If there are screws, turn them to the right to lift the rollers, then lift the door up and slant the bottom out of the track to remove it. If there are no screws, you can simply lift and slant to remove the door.

#2: Remove the dirt

The dirt in the track tends to get stuck. Take an old toothbrush and scrub the interior of both tracks to loosen the dirt. Then, vacuum the track out using the nozzle attachment on your vacuum.

Next, repeat the process but scrub with water or an all purpose cleaner so that you can remove all the possible bits of dirt, and then wipe clean with a rag. If there is hard-to-remove grime or dirty lubrication oil, scrub the track with acetone to remove this grease, and then wipe it clean with a new rag.

#3: Wash the wheels

The wheels at the top and bottom of the glass door are also likely coated in dirt. You will need to wipe these down thoroughly with acetone or rubbing alcohol to remove the grease and grime that has built up.

Scrubbing with a toothbrush dipped in water may be necessary if dirt has worked its way into the wheel so that it no longer turns. Once finished, make sure the wheels are dry and moving freely.

#4: Lubricate the door

The final step is lubrication. You can use a basic household lubricant or a lubricant formulated for use on garage doors, since these are made to operate well in a variety of temperatures.

Dampen a rag with the lubricant and wipe it down the interior of both the top and bottom track. Next, place a small droplet of lubricant into each wheel on the door. Finally, replace the door and lower the bottom wheels, if applicable. Open and shut the door a few times so the lubricant can work its way through the wheels.
